Healthy Road Trip Snacks
Anyone who said, “it’s about the journey, not the destination”, probably had a car full of great healthy road trip snacks. Food sets the tone for a long trip, and a sufficient supply of treats can help eliminate hunger pangs, gas station junk food desperation, and maybe even those trips to the drive-through window.
Sure, sweet, salty, crunchy, portable treats are the name of the game. That doesn’t have to mean a “grocery sweep” style running down the snack aisle. You can make light, healthier versions of many of these favourites at home. Supplement with plenty of new fruits and vegetables, plus water, and you’ll start your road trip on the right foot. Here are some choices to consider from our Recipe Finder.
Why do I choose to Prepare Meals and Healthy Road Trip Snacks?
This is a huge time saver! I like to prep all the best nights before a trip so everything is packed and ready to go, and I can feel decent knowing my domestic has healthy things lined up for them. So there is no need to stop wherever to grab a bite, which brings me to the following reason.
Save money: Since we have a wide variety of foods to choose from, there is no need to stop for fast food or elsewhere to buy overpriced snacks at gas stations and convenience supplies.
Keeps the children happy: Not only is there somewhat for everyone but snacking teaches good, healthy habits even when you’re on vacation. Your kids will go crazy for these delightful trail mix balls below!
A way to break up a long drive: We always bring a blanket and seats on our road trips since a great way to end a long drive is to picnic! Since we don’t go to restaurants now, enjoying outdoor cookouts is super friendly; it allows you to stretch your legs and eat healthily.
Helps make intelligent decisions: Prepping snacks helps me avoid grabbing that bag of chips and eating the whole thing, and it is also a great idea to do it every week, even when you’re not travelling. That way, you’ll always have healthy grab-and-go snacks at home that you can grab quickly instead of that bag of chips.
Ideas for Healthy Road Trip Snacks
Here is a complete breakdown of all my favorite snacks that I like to take on our road trips. Shopping at Safeway made it easy and affordable to find everything you needed, and their Open Nature and Signature SELECT ™ brands have a wide variety of products to choose from.
Fresh Fruit
I always pack fresh fruit on any trip we take; it’s so refreshing, healthy and easy to eat. Depending on the season, we love to pack strawberries, blueberries, grapes, watermelon, peaches or nectarines, apple slices, melon, kiwi, and even dried fruit like raisins and blueberries. Don’t forget the napkins!
Fresh Vegetables and Sauces
Along with fruit, I love consuming fresh sliced vegetables that you can enjoy on your own or for dipping. Some vegetarian options include carrots, cucumber slices, celery, bell pepper slices, etc. Hummus is our favorite for dipping, but you can also pack fresh salsa, or Safeway currently offers a variety of Open Nature Cauliflower Dips that taste amazing. We loved the baked red pepper cauliflower dip!
Nuts, Granola Bars, and Trail Mix Balls
These are very easy to eat and take on the go. Safeway’s Signature SELECT offers a wide variety of granola bars, different trail mixes and even bags of packaged almonds that come in small, perfect portions. I also love making trail mix energy balls that are a big hit with kids (and adults!) They require no baking, can be made in about 5 minutes with ingredients already in your pantry, and taste delicious as a road trip snack. You can find the recipe for these trail mix balls below.
Salads in a Jar
Making salads in a jar is a very convenient way to prepare a delicious and healthy lunch because they don’t make a mess and save a lot of space. And also, The pots don’t take up much space in the fridge, and you have everything you need for your meal in one jar. And also, The recipe for these jarred salads is a variation on my Tomato Cucumber Chickpea Salad. Still, I added a bit of quinoa for extra protein and fiber and fresh arugula for a complete salad. You can add shredded chicken or different vegetables and dressings to make them all your own.

Conclusion
A driver eats an average of 5,756 sandwiches during his lifetime while driving. And also, The latest Auto Europe survey has put this issue on the table, affecting health and pocketbooks. When hunger strikes during a car trip, drivers are glad to see a gas station or service area. However, the food found is usually expensive and of poor quality: hamburgers, pizzas, chips and sugary drinks.
